"Big Otter Mill"

The mill was built in Bedford County, Virginia and operated by Joseph Hardy Sr. a veteran of the Revolutionary War, who settled here in the late 1700's. It has been used for grist and sawmills for more than two hundred years.

Local tradition holds that a fire destroyed the building around 1916.

Mr. Reed Forbes ad his sons rebuilt the house at a higher elevation above the river and replaced the mill  in 1920. The mill was a combination of corn and flour mill with three working floors. The brand names were Golden Eagle Flour and Pioneer Corn Meal.

Like many old mills...Big Otter Mill served as a community center of sorts. This beautiful old mill is undergoing reconstruction. A waterwheel is its latest addition. Big Otter Mill host several fund raising events during each year and tours  can be arranged.

Pioneer Corn Bread

2 eggs beaten

1 1/4 cups milk

1/4 cup shortenig or bacon fat, melted

1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons sugar

2 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

Mix all ingredients...pour into greased black iron skillet...bake 400 degree oven for 20-25 minutes
